the skin barrier, simply explained

A quick lesson on the most important layer of your baby's skin, what it does, and how to support it.

We're two moms with finance backgrounds who got tired of importing clean baby creams from Europe just to meet higher safety standards. We tried what was on the shelves here, and nothing felt like the answer, so we built it. Made by moms, for moms.

so, what is the skin barrier?

Your baby's skin barrier is the outermost layer of their skin, only about as thick as a sheet of paper. The easiest way to picture it is a tiny brick wall. The skin cells are the bricks, and a blend of natural oils and fats holds them together like mortar. That wall is the whole reason skin can stay soft and protected.

bricks = skin cells  ·  apricot = natural oils & fats (the mortar)  ·  blue = moisture, held in

its purpose

keeps the good in
It holds water and hydration inside, so skin stays soft and supple.
keeps the rest out
It blocks irritants, allergens, bacteria and weather. It's the skin's first line of defense.

a strong wall vs. one that needs support

When the mortar is full, the wall holds: moisture stays in, irritation stays out. When that oily mortar thins out, tiny gaps open up. Moisture escapes through them (hello, dryness and tightness) and irritants slip in (hello, redness and reactivity). A baby's barrier is thinner and still developing through the first year, so it gets there faster than ours.

blue = moisture  ·  green = irritants. On the right, the mortar has thinned, so moisture escapes and irritants get in.

what most baby products actually do

Most products do one of two things, and both can be useful. What they usually skip is supporting the wall itself.

they sit on top
Occlusives like petroleum form a seal over the skin. That can lock moisture in, but it can also feel heavy and just coat the surface.
they add moisture
Most lotions add water and softness to the surface. It feels nice, but it doesn't strengthen the mortar, so the effect fades.
What's usually missing: support for the barrier itself, the mortar that holds it all together. That's the layer Mamou was built for.

support, not just seal or soften

The Baby Barrier Gel is a lightweight, breathable gel made to support that mortar layer, so skin can hold its own moisture and stay protected. Three organic oils that absorb in and let skin breathe. No petroleum, no heavy occlusives.
